One of our vendors, Abbey, is a busy mom of two, brought us some lovely burp pads, changing pads, and baby blankets. She used fun, mod fabric like Amy Butler and paired it with soft minky on the opposite. If you have a baby shower to buy for; these are not to be missed...completely unique and any mom would be delighted to receive!

Girls Love Bows (who make way more than just bows!) introduced their zebra line for girls. So fun for summer months...tank dresses, purses and yes...plenty of bows!

Ok, so maybe not today...it is expected to start pouring rain any minute in town. Which, is why I'm so pleased I worked all last week on my sunny window display! I made 21 mini pom poms (similar to the kits we sell and classes we teach in store) and paired them with The Twinery Lemondrop baker's twine for fun look. The twine gave it a great vintage look and I am sort of excited to see what happens when the sun naturally fades the pom poms out...maybe giving them an ombre effect?

Home Sweet Home...

Hi everyone! This is Lisa, just wanted to thank all our customers, friends and even vendors for all the cards, phone calls...even donations over the last few weeks. If you had not heard, I have been at MD Anderson for the last 6 weeks for radiation therapy after a successful surgery in January. Most people had no idea I was gone as my family (namely my mom and sister-in-law) stepped up and ran the whole show! They sent me daily pictures to update on our Facebook site, inventory lists to reorder, met with vendors...I am so appreciative, especially to mom who swore she would never go back into retail!

Also, I want to give a special thanks to a local group, Scott's Wish, that helped me with my lodging fees. This is a local group that lost their son to cancer (also a MD Anderson patient) and as his wish, they have continued on helping other young cancer patients. Check out the link and donate your time or money if you can...they do really good work!

Happy 3rd Birthday Nest!

Today makes it officially 3 years since we opened our doors at Nest. It has been a labor of love and dream come true all wrapped into one! And as much as you hope that people will "get" what you do and believe in your dreams as much as you do...they certainly don't have to as they have their own lives, dreams. That's why this past Saturday we were so humbled by the outpouring of love and support we received during our Anniversary King Cake Party! You people are awesome! Congrats to Dr. Karen Carter for winning the gift basket, special thanks to Lauren the new Queen of Erin for making a royal appearance, and to members of the Chamber of Commerce who stopped by the shop. Also I really appreciate all of the outpouring of well-wishes, cards, gifts, even donations to support me through my radiation treatment at MD Anderson. I am now in Houston through April and though I am focused on getting better I am also spending time dreaming up new things for Nest!

One of our must have holiday gifts this past season was hands down our up-cycled wine bottle cheese trays. Made locally by the talented Sherri White and distributed by us exclusively, we couldn't be prouder to carry this most unique item (and to have emptied a few bottles on her behalf!) Excitedly, she sent me a few pictures of some new work in progress that I had to share with all of you. Each bottle, due to the process, is one of a kind; she likes to add an etched fleur de lis on the flat bottles and is now moving into some new designs shaping the bottle into a bowl (great for serving tidbits)...and on the way soon...beer bottles! A bit smaller and perfect for a spoon rest...they have a gorgeous amber color! These move fast, which is just one more reason to visit Nest often!

If you have come to the shop within the last month, you may have noticed our regular hours have been abbreviated to accommodate my absence. On November 24th, 2010, the day before Thanksgiving, I was diagnosed with a rare cancer, Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the parotid gland. Luckily, its early and doesn't show signs of metastasis...also, quite fortunately, I was accepted by MD Anderson in Houston, who quickly scheduled a successful surgery (completed January 14th). During all of my doctor visits and now my recovery, my friends and family have so graciously kept my shop open and I can't thank them enough.
When I received my diagnosis, I never had one of those moments of I wish I could have done this or that because frankly, I'm living my life exactly as I want to and having my own store is my dream come true. So for everyone that has asked and will continue to ask if there is anything you can do to help me...please support my shop, Nest online or in Ponchatoula. Your support directly puts groceries on my table, gas in my car to get to Houston, and eventually those hospital bills. And with your support, I promise to continue to bring unique artists and products into Nest everyday.

Mardi Gras Madness!

Fresh off Christmas, we are bounding into Mardi Gras season here at Nest. It's one of my favorite holidays as it is so special to my home in Southern Louisiana. Sometimes it can be portrayed as a festival of debauchery and madness, but as we locals know, there is nothing more family friendly than neighborhood parades, marching bands, and best yet...king cake. Today begins another season with what we know as Twelfth Night and will end on March 8th or as we call it, Fat Tuesday!

2010 Reflections...

Every year I make myself go through my calendar and blog just to see how far I've come and if I have reached goals, changed direction, or totally missed the mark of this year's intentions. This year was a tough one for me personally with health related issues; for the area, the economy was on everyone's mind and the BP Oil Disaster was of no help. Through it all, Nest was my joy and I really take pride in reflecting how we grew as a store and responded to the needs of our customers (and really made a ton of wonderful memories).

Here are the highlights:

January - our website grew a new section of Seasonal merchandise and we donated a portion of sales to Doctors Without Borders for Haiti earthquake relief. Also, I was honored to be chosen as an associate to the Board of Directors for our local Chamber of Commerce.
February - We had one of our best Valentine's to date, Nest made 2 years in business...and, oh yeah...the Saints won the Superbowl!
March - I joined the fabulous community of Handmade Spark as one of their blog writers focusing my articles on retail side of the handmade movement.
April - Created and produced our Toula Girl line of tees and jewelry just in time for Strawberry Fest...it has since become a local favorite.
May - worked as a co-chair on the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce City Wide Yard Sale and help promote the event with radio spots and assisting with press releases!
June - 1st Annual City Wide Yard Sale goes off without a hitch! Also, started offering craft classes at Nest with our Summer Series.
July - A big undertaking...we began wholesaling my products to several new stores!
August - finished our Summer Series with a well received Gardening class given by my mom, the expert green thumb!
September - We joined the Hammond Farmers' Market and just fell in love with all our fellow handmade vendors and new customers!
October - Went to Atlanta for a special buying trip. Developed a new series on Handmade Spark just for Brick and Mortars and those that market to them called, Behind the Register.
November - Our Holiday Open House was a hit during Ponchatoula's annual Trade Days Festival. On Black Friday we offered free massages that everyone loved...oh yeah, we'll do this again! I started a Facebook group associated with Handmade Spark for our Brick and Mortar community.
December - great season! Open call for new vendors for the new year...already I am so amazed at the talent we are booking for the new year!!!

Frenchie Finds a Furever Home...

Many of you, over the last few months, got to know Frenchie our resident neighborhood cat that we took in in hopes of finding him a real permanent home. Happily it happened a few weeks ago and all is going well with his new family. However, as you know with Cats...there are plenty more to go around. Case in point, this little kitten showed up at my back door last week. She has a clean bill of health from the vet and is free to good home that is willing to have her spayed. We've named her Pumpkin.

This past weekend I went to Hotlanta for a little R&R with my good friend and massage therapist, Dion. (FYI: I highly recommend traveling with a massage therapist wherever you go...I felt like such a diva!) I am incredibly proud of my new pom pom graduates! This past Saturday we revived our summer pom pom class and made a "tailgate edition" in either Saints or LSU team colors! Everyone did a fantastic job and now they are all set to cheer our favorite teams on to victory! Now Offering Wholesale!

That's right my retail friends; we are rolling out phase one of our wholesale division (i.e. me working my tail off). We've already partnered with a few loyal retailers over the past couple of years and now we are ready to offer it to a wider audience of established brick and mortar retailers.

Phase one includes our custom made tutus for children & pets, also our fun pom pom kits.

Phase two will include more one of a kind/few of a kind projects we create and also a few artists that have agreed to let us be their representation (Yay! If you follow the store you might be able to guess who they are!).

Book Wreath Class Next Saturday

Books are my passion almost as much as crafting. So it is with sheer delight that I am offering this fun class that combines both my love of the written word and creating a meaningful work of art. It is not difficult to make but does require you to be precise, so for that reason I am keeping the class very, very small. Also, by doing this it allows me to really work with you to totally customize what you want to make. As you can see from the pictures; story, age of the book, color, illustrations gives each wreath it's own personality. We will meet Saturday July 17th, from 1pm to 3:30pm; if you want to be included, you must contact me prior to the class so I can prep for your attendance...regrettably, I will not be able to accommodate walk-ins at this class.

Interview: Ann Meyer of MELA Designs

We would not be what we are today if it were not for the talented artisans that frequent the shelves of our shop. Handmade is important to us and we wanted to lift the veil and let you meet some of these wonderful people. From time to time on the blog, we will profile these talents that we are also proud to call our friends!

Meet Ann Meyer of MELA Designs: She has been working with us for a little over a year now creating these magnificent mosaics and soft goods (vintage style pillows, bags, and animals). A busy mom, I was lucky to get a moment from her to answer these questions (Thanks Ann!):

Please give us a brief bio and your location:
New Orleans born and raised but living in Denham Springs at the present time. I am single mom with two teenagers and a full time job.

What do you create and what led you to create this product?
Mosaic art work using old plates and tiles. It all started when I saw an article on how to decorate stepping stones with old plates and decided to give it a try. It just kind of grew from there.

What inspires you? How do you stay creative and develop new ideas?
Walking around a salvage store. I love taking old things and creating something new and beautiful with them.

What things/ideas are you pondering that Nest fans can look forward to seeing in the coming months?

I’ve started a couple of mirrors and hope to have them completed soon.

When you are not busy creating new items for Nest, what can we find you doing in your down time?
Down time? What is that? I love to always be working on a project. I love to garden, paint, sew and especially shop.

If you had one thing you wanted to tell someone venturing out in a new handmade business, what would it be?
Find something you truly love to do.

'Toula Cooks Too!

I was delighted to start my day off with a fresh delivery of brand spankin' new cookbooks from our local Chamber of Commerce! Last year's Volume One was a hit and quite the keepsake with recipes from generations in town (including my Grammie and Mother). This edition, in my opinion, has a lot more contemporary offerings that are easier for the new or busy cook (i.e. ME). (BTW, my hummus recipe made on page 13! Woot!) In fact, I've been reading it all day since they arrived and I'm STARVING! It's a good thing that the addresses are not listed for those that submitted recipes...otherwise they would be making an extra place for me tonight at the dinner table!

We plan to list this on the website for purchase, for our out of town shoppers...keep watch here or on Facebook and Twitter.

Red, White and You!

Thanks to all our participants in this past weekend's Tissue Pom Pom Class! As a group, we voted to go patriotic (with the promise that I will do a pom pom class in the Fall for LSU/Saints styles...yes, it's definitely going to happen!) Everyone's pom poms came out just fantastic and they actually look like fireworks...too cute! It was a great group and duly noted that I will have to add time to each class for all the gossip, cutting up, and plain fun...but what else do you expect when a bunch of girls get together!

This was our first instructional class of the series; this Thursday we will be presenting a Free lecture on Starting a Craft Based Business. I highly recommend it to anyone that has ever thought of launching an idea or dream as we will go over a lot of general business information as well as creative techniques. Check this out...I love it when customers send us pictures of how they use our products! One of our best, and most talented I may add...sent us this adorable picture of how she used our muffin/cupcake cookie cutters! Next time though, I want to see them in person...and I want a taste!

Here's a sneak peek of something new I am working on...I got a few of these lovely linen hemstitched guest towels in and now I am silk screening them! This combination is a black towel and gold fleur de lis (from a very old illustration)...I guess with this heatwave I am focusing on cooler days and some Saints football! WHODAT! They will be dry and heat set tomorrow for purchase. (if I get a minute tomorrow, I'll post it on the Etsy shop too!)

Back from the Beach!

We had an opportunity last week to travel to Destin, FL and curious, we wanted to see first hand how our favorite beaches were fairing after the massive and disastrous oil spill from Deep Water Horizon. So far...just very green from seaweed. Normally, I would be upset swimming in green goo...but hey...this won't kill you. So we thanked our lucky stars that we got to enjoy its fleeting beauty because I imagine it will take a while for the beach to come back.

At night the resort we stayed in, Sandestin, comes alive with live music, little boutiques, and great restaurants. We met a super nice shopkeep, Keena from Coco & Co. She has a fantastic eye for jewelry so if visiting the area make sure you put this shop on your list!

I bake to cope and came up with these cute Oil Slick Cupcakes on the fly. It's super easy: a box of Ghirardelli Ultimate Brownie Mix (the one with the fudge sauce included) and graham cracker flavored Goldfish. They look so cute and taste delicious, it almost makes you forget what a mess we are in!

Nest is going on a little retreat this week and will open back up this coming Saturday, but I wanted to remind everyone that we still have a few openings left for our first class of the Summer Series on June 19th...Make Your Own Pom Pom Trio! The ladies that have already signed up are a hoot and a half...trust me, they will definitely bring the entertainment factor and I'll bring the know-how, supplies, and refreshments, all for you to make your own set of three large tissue pompoms. They are just precious and are sure to liven up a shower, party, or child's room and you can easily learn this for a simple $10 investment.

City Wide Yard Sale This Saturday!!!

Its been a busy couple of months for me, if you haven't notice with my lack of post here on the blog. Now I can tell you, I've been in the throws of assisting the City Wide Yard Sale Committee develop a map and strategically plan this massive sale...yep, the entire town is having the sale!

Nearly 100 sales will be going on Saturday morning, between residents, businesses, and organizations. We will begin giving maps out Saturday morning to guide you to the sales with a brief description of what to find at each location (get yours at Nest). At this point, I am the only one that has been privy to these listings (as I complied them) and tho I can not divulge what I know, believe me there are plenty of unique items going for sale!

Possibly the craziest thing I've done is to actually take part in the sale as I'm planning the overall sale...but, yes...Nest will have BIG sale in the front yard. I've cleaned out my ENTIRE house and back of the store; so there will be plenty of decorative and vintage items, plus a really large assortment of household items, books, and some furniture. Also, it looks like Mary Lindsey will be setting up a booth with her jewelry and Rebecca, formally of Cool Cats/Hot Dogs, may also be clearancing her pet store items! So come check us out and visit Ponchatoula for this one of a kind sale!

Through the Trees...

Wow...It's been nearly a month since I updated the blog...yikes! So what have I been up to...nearly everything (the hammock picture is where I would prefer to be)! May is busy in retail...Moms, Graduations, and Teacher Appreciation...thank goodness. And despite all this encouraging activity, we were sad to learn one of our fellow retailers closed up about 2 weeks ago. After being set back by two devastating hurricanes, she was not willing to ride the new impending disaster of the oil spill only +/- 120 miles from us in an already sluggish economy. I can't blame her, in independent retailing there are days when no one comes in, days when mothers let children run wild, days when you spend half an hour finding the perfect gift for that picky in-law just to have your customer say "Thanks, I'll think about it" and walk out. It takes a good bit of sacrifice; but on the upside, there is a freedom to make your own way, build real relationships with customers that become friends, and sale by little sale...improve this economy. So, I've said it before and I'll say it again...thank you to all of you of for honoring us with your business! We are here because of YOU!

You see, its a greeting card and a magnet...a great 2 for 1! And just in time for Mother's Day and Teacher Appreciation Week, we have two fun styles "All Moms Go to Heaven" and "All Teachers Go to Heaven" (Truer words never spoken, huh?). Berry Tired.

Whew...we made it through another Strawberry Festival! It was great fun and thrill to see so many of our friends and family for the parade Saturday...I've been told Nest is the best place to watch as the crowd is so family friendly (and pet friendly too)! We practically ate our way through the festival...fried soft shell crab, strawberry beignets, and shrimp on a stick were just a few we sampled. After work, we headed down to the fairgrounds and took in the free music and cool evening breezes. It was just a fantastic time and I can't wait till next year...but first I need a little nap.

Our tiny town is in full prep mode for our biggest event of the year...the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival! If you are planning to attend, here are some tips to help you make the most of your visit with us!

10. Prepare to walk... off street parking is available on a first come basis and is often distant from the fairgrounds (be prepared to walk). Many people & businesses offer parking for a small fee...its worth it and often goes to charitable events.
9. Dress comfortably; it can get incredibly warm by mid day here...and humid!
8. Don't miss the festival...the actual festival occurs at the fairgrounds which is located on 6th street 2 blocks off mainstreet. There are vendors for miles on mainstreet, which many people often confuse with the actual festival.
7. Prepare to shop...as I said there are miles of vendors! Storefronts like mine and many arts and craft booths are open for business!
6. Prepare to eat (and drink)! The best bets are strawberry beignets, chocolate covered strawberries, and strawberry daiquiris.
5. Restrooms...most businesses do not have a public restroom or they limit it to paying customers. The city does provide a number of port-a-lets (including handicap accessible).
4. Catch the parade...Saturday morning at promptly 9:30 the official parade will roll down mainstreet. Beads, Elmers chocolate candy, and doubloons will be thrown to the crowd. The parade will also feature town officials, Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
3. Don't litter...keep our town as you found it, please.
2. Study alternate routes to get in to town (the "backway" thru Hwy.22 or Airport exit of I-12 are good choices especially on Saturday).

A bunch of new flags came in yesterday...this one of a bee skep is too stinkin' cute. I love bees...did I ever mention I almost became a hobbyist bee keeper (I got talked out of that one quickly)...they just fascinate me, tho...Something so teeny that is so important for our food supply! So all this buzz made me take stock of all our bee designs...here is a sampling:

It's strawberry season in town, as big and juicy flats of the biggest, sweetest strawberries are lined up downtown just waiting to be purchased. Yum! And down here in little Ponchatoula, not to brag or anything, but we kinda have the corner on the market on the best and tastiest Strawberries in the world (ok, yeah...I am biased). To celebrate, we put on an annual festival...its a big deal, too (second to Mardi Gras in New Orleans)...this year it will be April 9, 10, and 11th, for more details look here.

It's a ton of fun and if you are anywhere close, you need to visit! At Nest, we spend months preparing and stocking our store with the cutest and most unique strawberry items for the locals in preparation for their parties. Yesterday a customer tried to buy my Money Cat. She sits high on a shelf facing the door where most people probably do not even notice her, but she was spied yesterday to which I heard, "Oh that's adorable, I'll take it" To which, I kindly responded "no." and explained what a money cat is and does. It's a little bit Feng Shui, if you've never encountered one...A money cat is for luck basically, left paw raised brings money, the right paw brings luck...and this little lucky kitty brings them both. Actually, I've always had one wherever I have worked, whether I was working in my past life in a cube, or my home office, and now the shop. This one was a gift from my mother when we opened the store; I have no idea where she's from...but she is the silliest, girliest, and cutest one I've ever seen and she does her job...let me assure you. I'd like to think she did her part getting us through the recession and then some...so that's why she's not for sale.

For anyone that knows us and has shopped with us at Nest, you know very well, what a Hen party this is...Women owned, women supported (with local vendors and such). Its not so much that we are trying to exclude the guys (believe me, we have plenty that appreciate our discretion as they purchase several Appletini bath bombs...for themselves...trust me, I won't tell); we just want this NEST to be a girlie retreat for anyONE that wants to tap into their feminine side.

So, with that bit of information, it may come as a shock to you that our newest consignor is a Man...Sacre bleu! Actually, it's really okay as I'm sure he would attest to being hen-pecked; I think he is more than ready for our discerning customer base. So without further ado...let me introduce you to...John Lyell.

John is a craftsman with a simple, clean Shaker style vision towards furniture design. He can also mimic just about any furniture piece or create a custom built-in. He was born and bred in New Orleans, Louisiana and still resides there. Here is a sampling of what he has brought us...there is plenty more in store!

I find that I receive creativity in spurts rather than a smooth and constant flow (as I wish it would be). So, recognizing that creative itch this week, I let my fingers go...and a few new lovely creations came forth!

I love these petite lavender gems...almost with an inner glow.

Making Wishes...

If you can believe it? Because I can't quite...we're 2 years old today! Okay, technically we threw open the doors to Nest on February 29th, a leap year...but just a technicality. I've not yet ventured into motherhood, but starting and running a business has got to be up there with raising children...I mean, it is your baby, right? And what a two years...a killer recession, a hurricane ripped off our roof, and a sewage drain back up into the store...just a few of the highlights! Through perseverance, or maybe we are just dumb...we fought it out and are still kicking. Even though bad things happen (and I'm sure they will still)...its the little things that make being an indie boutique owner worthwhile...a heartfelt conversation with a customer, the warm embrace of a community, and seeing that dream you only once imagine come to life.

In the next few weeks our VIP's (i.e. the mailing list) will be receiving special mailings celebrating these two years with us. Please contact me if you would like to receive this or you are just not sure if you are on our list?

Pepe is my main man...now, retired from the store but he wanted to make sure I let everyone know not to forget your pets this Valentine's Day! We've got a lot of new sweatshirts and sweaters (in larger sizes too), collar charms, tutus, and Pepe's favorite...Toys!

Thanks to everyone who shopped with us this past week in store and online! We were able to donate 10% of our sales last week to Doctors Without Borders because of your generous support!

And I am excited to tell you there is a little Part Deux of our effort for Haiti...thanks to our special customer, Melanie. She just brought me about a dozen handmade heart sachets for me to use as I wish for our Haiti benefit! So, I've decided to donate 100% of the sale (minus tax and transaction fees, etc.) on this particular product.

These sachets are impeccably well made and have a lovely rose scent and they are only $5.95. A perfect gift for Valentine's with a wonderful story!

This week at Nest we are giving a portion of all sales to The Emergency Relief Fund set up for Haiti by Doctors Without Borders. Personally, seeing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina first hand and now reveling in the rebirth of New Orleans through the Superbowl-bound Saints; I know miracles can happen...but sometimes they need a push...namely money. So, I hope you will help us collect these needed funds and in turn get something really lovely at Nest for yourself or someone dear to you.

The benefit starts today and runs through this Saturday. Any sale is eligible...in-store, online, even our Etsy page!

We were lucky enough to get a couple of new paintings from one of our favorite local artists, Ana Vindas, this month. They are just beautiful (trust me, the pictures do not do them justice!) Most of Ana's themes are based in nature and have a whimsical, abstract quality. Nest is really proud to be her exclusive dealer on the Northshore and Tangipahoa Parish. However, you can see a good bit of her collection at Q&A Day Spa in town as they are big fans and collectors, too!

Again, this may be the last couple of paintings for a while as Ana is expecting the arrival of her son next month and will be VERY busy! We are so excited for her and can not wait to be aunties! Here she is at the baby shower we hosted this past weekend.

The Power of Reinvention...

Here we are, a brand new year, a new decade, and though some of you may be finding yourselves tying up loose ends from 2009, I am already hopeful from what I am seeing in just the early weeks of 2010. There is a TV commercial playing now that speaks of how small business is "reinventing" our economy...I love that; it stopped me in my tracks and made me think for a moment before smiling and saying "YEAH!" It is so true; speaking as an independent business, we did not get bailed out like the big banks and auto manufacturers...those indies that have survived and that will continue to, have done it though tenacity and creativity. So what can you do as an individual? Get involved! Shop local, create a community garden, mentor at a local school that is suffering budget cuts, support your local Chamber of Commerce and merchant associations through donations and volunteerism.
Make 2010 the year we not only reinvent the economy but create a renewed commitment to the importance of where we spend our money and our time. Thank you!

I almost can not believe another year is over AND a new decade is beginning. 2010...can you believe it??? I always try to reflect on the past year's milestones but as I'm writing this now I am trying to remember what the last ten years has brought to me...more importantly who I've become. Nest was just a glimmer back in those days...a dream, really. Iphones and Facebook did not exist yet (my favorite toys)...what in the world did I do back then? I lost a few great friends and family members along the way but never seemed short on finding cats and dogs (yay.) But most importantly, I have no regrets as I move myself and business into this new decade. I am so excited to share with you soon the new plans we have for the shop as we've been busy planning away with our exclusive lines and local vendors!

I am not sure what it is about the winter season that pulls me back into small handicrafts and my now current obsession of knitting; maybe its being solitary, quiet with a snoozing furry friend near by, while all is blustery and cold outside? I am hoping this spurt in inspiration will turn into some gifts; I gave myself a challenge this year to either make or buy all my gifts local...so far so good...I've not stepped into a mall or big box store yet! Of course, now I'm nursing a sore shoulder from the knit-a-thon but I think its going to be worth it! I've decided my next challenge will be to learn crochet, that is, once I crank out a few more knitted gifts for this holiday season. Here are some current inspirations fueling my desires:

Southern Snow!

For the second time, two years in a row, we've had snow before Christmas! And though; it was more of a light dusting than the white out of last year. I think all of us Southerners can agree, snow once a year is welcomed!

Thanks to all who braved the elements last night and came to Nest for a little wine; it was so much fun! Abbey, formerly of Submerge, did the honors and pulled the winning name for the beautiful bath gift basket her sister Katie created for us. This past holiday weekend, I began decorating the house in earnest. It was debatable as I've done several trees for the shoppe already this year. However, I can't help myself, with all the good cheer from all our customers this weekend, it was infectious! I went a bit smaller this year; a tabletop tree...it's better with three curious chihuahuas...however, someone (ahhemm...Pepe!) figured out how to get on the table. Hopefully, there will be no other challenges; so, here are a few pics of some of my favorite ornaments from my private stash:

Design Tip: Where to Put the Tree!

Growing up, it was always a hobby for my mom and I to go and tour new homes under construction or homes that had just hit the market. No wonder I ended up in interior design? Inevitably, the conversation would go, "its nice, but where would you put the Christmas tree???" That seems to be my discerning factor for no matter where I live; where do I center that tree; the tree that will be our backdrop for memories made and where treasured ornaments will be hung once again?! I've lived in quite a few places and some being quite small (including a dorm room) that I was all successful in carving out room for a tree! Here are a few pictures I gathered up that I think will spark your imagination if you should be short on room but not holiday cheer!

Design Tip: Fall to Winter Transistion

In the shoppe, we've been getting quite a bit of interest in our holiday trees and tablescapes and at the same time, curious faces wondering if its indeed time for to start decorating at home. My answer is a question "why ever stop?". I'm always reusing and transitioning one piece to another through holiday to holiday in my home. There are two things that hold the most weight when choosing a holiday theme...concept and color. I'll explain...you need a tight concept in your seasonal decor just as you would apply to any of your regular purchases in your home. If it doesn't fit your year round style...do not get it. This year in the store, many of our trees have a woodland theme; pine cones, glittered branches, weathered bird nests; its a concept we've been building all year and any of these pieces really could be used in the spring with a slightly different accent color. Its all about making smart choices and defining your personal style.

Next...color...who says Christmas has to be red and green? There are soooo many options now, that your holiday palate can be anything you dream. Personally, I really like warm colors and metallics...they do double duty through Fall right through Christmas...Silver accents can take you right through winter as well. Metallics can also be a good neutral to play off of your own home's colors. Here's a few examples at the shoppe; we will be taking you through more tips throughout the season...so check back often!

but can also lend year round drama to dinner parties.

A Dog Party!

A Small dog party, that is! Yes, we closed a little early yesterday evening to represent at the Northshore Small Dog Howl-o-ween party located at the Speakeasy Too Coffeehouse in Madisonville, LA ...and yes, it was a tail waggin' good time for all! If you've never been to a dog related event...particularly, a small dog one...imagine about twenty or so adults staring at the floor ohhhing and ahhhing. After about 20 mins, we all looked up and realized people were there too and introduced ourselves. They put together these meetups every couple months...and we will try to pass them along so you can join us!

Who's the Boss...and a contest!

Tomorrow is bosses' day here in the states...I'm my own, I suppose...with no employees...so I'm not really expecting much. I might sleep in and let our shop dog, Chico, snuggle up with me a little longer. It has not been that long ago though that I've forgotten what its like to work for someone...in fact, if it had not been for some of the crazier bosses I've had I might not have had the courage to start my own business. I think the one that took the cake was a lady I worked for who happen to have the same first name as me...I didn't think it would be an issue until a week or so after I started working the phone calls started coming in for either the "old Lisa" (her) or "young Lisa" (me)...she soon insisted everyone call me "junior"!?...among a few other reasons, I quit in three months.

So, I am sure there are some very nice bosses out there and besides with the economy and job market what it is...can we afford to not thank them? I've come up with a few "Boss Economic Stimulus" ideas...i.e...affordable gifts that show you care but leave you enough cash to maybe get yourself a little something (because, after all WE all know who's doing the work...right?)...I promise there IS a contest...keeping reading!!!

When I walked in this morning, I noticed all of my business cards had been laid out in a specific pattern...immediately, I thought ghost, aliens (I'm sure they need good gifts, too, right?), the crazy spiders that spin webs all night in the store? Nah, my mom has been tutoring kids in the evening on Wednesdays. The funny thing is that neither of us remembers them being alone long enough to make this actually pretty nifty "art work". It's amazing how the energy in the shop changes when the kids are here...you really have to be in the moment...between the juice boxes, homework lessons, and yes, the occasional fart story...we were tuckered out within a couple hours...how do you moms do it?! I think I'll stick to four legged children for a little longer...

What's Snew...

Actually, I just looked it up on Urban Dictionary and its been used to describe the past tense of snow. (I thought that was "snowed"). Anywho...lookie, lookie at what's snew...

Kitchen Prep...

I think I may have forgotten to mention a few weeks back, that we received a nice reorder on these adorable Cath Kidston Recipe Organizers. I regretted not nabbing one for myself and made sure to remedy it this time around. With the holidays quickly approaching, I took the opportunity this weekend to start organizing my recipes and planning what those special meals will be! I have to say its a fabulous book with the inside filled with great conversion charts and nice labeled tabbed dividers. Each divider has a pocket to put newspaper clippings and in my case, some nice hand written recipe cards from family and friends through out the years. It is actually a three-ring binder which makes it easy too to accommodate magazine clippings in protective sleeves...cute and functional.

I think this would be a fabulous gift for a bride; how neat would it be to collect recipes from your family and bestow it on a new bride and groom. Or even for that favorite experimental cook...the recipe sheets have in addition to the typical "ingredients" & "instructions," a section for notes...which in my case, I'm always changing things up and this way I can have a place to track what worked and what did not.

In Focus...

Next month I will be taking a photography class at the new studio that recently opened just above our shop. Its a six week course and I've been assured that even with my piddly point and shoot, I'll be able to manage it! Anyone want to join us? Classes start October 12th and are every Monday until November 16th from 6:30p to 8:00p. With my on going efforts to relaunch our e-commerce site (soon I swear!), I am always trying to improve my photography skills through lighting, composition, etc. I think, on the other hand, this is the perfect time to grab some needed pointer tips for the holidays too! Be Good to Yourself...

This week I am trying to be extra careful with myself by doing at least one kind thing for myself each day. After feeling like being on a never ending treadmill last week, I completely crashed by the time I got to the weekend (my ME time! Which was spent asleep in bed). So, this morning I got up a little early and made a chocolate-hazelnut crepe for just me...it felt totally decadent! It was something I had not done in quite a long time and was much better than my usual butter smeared across a dry slab of toast.

So, with the holidays just around the corner, start thinking of ways that you can take back a little bit of your time...its not about being selfish...its about taking the necessary steps to replenish your drive and energy to keep giving to your love ones (and yourself). Here are a few easy suggestions that just came into the shop today:

Weekend Warriors...

If you are local, you are well aware that we've been getting some rain...ok, A LOT of rain...buckets full. Which is good, because its been dry for some time now...but it seems we have arrived in some opposite, soggy world...I digress. This weekend (or my weekend, which runs Sunday thru Monday), I had to give my garden gloves and tools a rest and find something inside to do...With all my many unfinished projects, I decided to tackle the kitchen window for once and all. Which for the most part was incredibly simple...MANY of my customers have told me how they use our dishcloths as cafe curtains...intrigued, I was excited to try it for myself, too...the best part is that the clip rings cost more than both towels put together! The valence was a bit more of a labor of love, but totally worth it...I got the idea from one of my favorite blogs, Posie gets Cozy; which basically is a complementary gingham fabric that I cross-stitched a folk pattern, then lined it and made a pocket for the rod. I think, once complete...C and I stared at it for a full five minutes...not sure if we were in awe that I made something so cute or that I actually finished a project!

The finished product! The flower in the vase is a Hurricane Lily (also called a Naked Lady)...a heritage plant that is a relative of the amaryllis family; these were planted by my great grandmother.

A Special Thank You...

Everyday we depend on our customers and deeply appreciate their continued support through their purchases and word of mouth advertising. One customer and friend, though, just went above and beyond for me yesterday. If you read this blog for any length of time, you've probably gathered that the strangest things happen to me and about 85% of that time it deals with some orphaned animal (because I'm a huge sucker, I suppose). Wednesday evening when I returned home, I noticed the dogs barking at something just outside of the fence...upon closer inspection it was a baby squirrel that had fallen from a nest. Despite the 35ft. drop, he was fine...but...ugh, I do not know a thing about mothering...especially a squirrel! Thank God for the internet...I located some quick articles and cleaned him up and got him snuggled up on a heating pad. Luckily, Charlotte reminded me one of our customers, Reba, is a squirrel rehabilitator and she gave us enough tips to keep him healthy until we could hand him over yesterday evening. It was actually a lot of fun; I brought him to the shop to feed him regularly and those that heard about it came by to see a baby squirrel up close. Charlotte noted though, late in the day that Earl (as we named him) stunk and actually made the store stink. Um...so if you were in yesterday and you smelled something squirrelly...that's well, because it was...sorry. So, again thank you Reba and I should also note, that she quickly pointed out that Earl is a girl. Um...sorry once again.

It was a difficult decision, deciding who what be best suited for what...we have so many to choose from...a cheerleader, fire chief, cop and prisoner to name a few! How to Properly Tailgate...

Deep within the South you can hear their stirrings...that's right, football fans! Ok, so I may not know my way around a goal post to a...I don't know...fifty yard line (whew...that was my extent of football knowledge) BUT I know how to party! After all, as a graduate of Louisiana State University, it was part of the curriculum! During my first semester at LSU, I would walk past the parking lots to get to my afternoon classes on a Friday and see whole villages erected from the morning. It was RV land...bbq wafting through the air, ice chests stacked and filled with beer, and in a rare instance, a fully operational ceiling fan rigged off of a giant live oak branch (I kid you not). Everyone talks about how college is an eyeopening experience...and this was one of my first...my introduction to the football fan. You can't help but catch the fever and its one of those special connections that stays with us long after graduation. So, for all my fellow tigers, I introduce some very special products to make this football season even more magnificent!

or why I like to be a girl...

this weekend came and went in a flash and I so conveniently came down with a 48hr bug that made me house bound for the entirety of it. No worries...I always have something to be done in my tiny studio space. A couple requests came in from some budding ballerinas for me to make some of my special tutus which I was more than happy to oblige, I even made a few extra for the shop. Which brings me to the great tuile/tool debate this weekend.

"Honey, where is my new tuile?"
"What tool?"
"No, TUILE...that I use for the tutus"
"I have no idea what tool you use to make those."

All the while, I'm thinking, yes I can work a power drill but I can make a tutu too! It's fabulous to be a girlie girl!

For those of you in town that regularly read this blog, maybe you noticed we've been staying late almost every night this week. It's been quite unintentional, but as I'm about to show you, we have been getting daily shipments and I am too excited to go home without opening every package and looking at every item! As, we move into our second year, I am really enjoying how the store seems to be maturing. It is so evident in some of our new wares, I think you'll see. I recently, had a soon-to-be shop keeper stop by for advice and listened to her plans for her own shop. I cautioned her, "You can plan all you like, and you should, just don't be surprised when your store takes on a life of it's own." It's true, with any creation, you plant the seed and organically it grows through everyone that touches it; and in our case, its our customers, vendors, friends and family that have helped define this shop better than I could have ever imagined for myself. Okay, I've prattled on enough! I'll show you the goods!!

Glitter Everywhere...

As I hinted at in my last post, yes, we are receiving Christmas items (and Halloween) in the shop daily. Most are being squirreled away to be revealed during our annual Fall Fest (in conjunction with Ponchatoula's Trade Days Festival); everything tho must be checked in by me. That means every Santa must have his hat on straight, every stripe on the candy canes perfect, every snowman...well, you get the picture. Its a lot like Santa's workshop, except its blazing hot outside. Which brings me to my next item...the glitter. Now begins several months long of finding glitter everywhere...its on every seasonal item we get...and it is pretty, but it gets everywhere. Its on me, the dog, and much like sand at the beach...places that I can't quite understand how it got there? I'm reminded of last year's private joke at the shop. I had gone to get some blood work and there in the bend of my arm was some stubborn glitter. The technician remarked..."that body glitter is sure hard to get off, huh?" To which, I responded, "I'm not an exotic dancer...I'm a retailer!"

Despite the glittery mess, we do have some really great things about to hit the floor. Here's a sneaky peak:

Ode to Summer...

August already...another Summer is passing me by. I knew it was over when I received my first box of Christmas ornaments last week and now, despite the heat, I am desperately trying to hang on to Summer, similar to a kid that has to wake up and go back to school kicking and screaming. I remember as a kid, just dreading the start of school. I always was a quiet child...summer was my time to explore the woods, read a book a week, take a nap on the porch while being lulled to sleep by the ceiling fan motor. School just represented that crazy, busyness, noisiness of frantic kids, piles of homework with deadline after deadline, and life going into fast forward. So, to the quiet kid in the back of the room...it does get better. One day you can even make your own quiet little Nest where you can pretend its summer for as long as you like! Or at least until you get excited about decorating for Christmas.

I have a bunny! Well, not really...but he is often in the yard every evening when I return from the store. He seems to like his evening munch in the lawn by the edge of the woods. And he doesn't even seem to mind me stomping around with my stealth wildlife camera action (not) capturing his every cute nibble, nor the barking of three little chihuahuas. He reminds me so much of Peter Rabbit.

A few things made it in the shop late last week. Here are couple items that I'm particularly excited about offering (and trying to convince myself not to take home with me).

This past weekend, I (and the rest of the world) enjoyed the new Harry Potter movie! I have always been a huge fan of the books and every movie translates them just beautifully. This one though, I was really taken aback as the set design was just so visually stunning. I think there is a lot to take away from the spaces that are created in this epic. There is a timelessness and a quality of whimsy that they capture perfectly. I see bits of this trending everywhere now but here its more than a backdrop, it becomes a character as well. Here are a few pics I gathered...there is however one I can't find and would love...as Malfoy walks to the Room of Requirement he passes next to a round birdcage within another birdcage containing two canaries. Its one of the most breathtaking objects I've ever seen! Watch for it and enjoy these:

Daytrippin': Ocean Springs, MS

Today we head East and to another tiny town...one of my favorites: Ocean Springs, MS. Near Biloxi, it has a wonderful old timey cottage feel from the moment you arrive on the main street. The main attraction in Ocean Springs and probably their biggest claim to fame is it is the home of the late artist Walter Inglis Anderson.

He is probably one of my biggest artistic influences and certainly what brought me to Ocean Springs years ago. Our first stop had to be the small museum dedicated to his work with constant changing exhibits that always delight. I think one of the things I love best about Anderson is his interpretation of nature and the way he breaks it down in pattern and shape. He worked in this town and travelled to nearby Horn Island capturing a landscape not too uncommon from where I live, yet he always shows me something I've missed and reminds me to pay attention a little better.

For lunch, we went to another one of my favorites, nearby Phoenicia, a Greek/Lebanese restaurant. You can look at the menu but I recommend skipping it and just listen to the specials. They feature whatever bounty that has just been brought in from the Gulf and fresh, fresh, fresh! AND if they have their famous crab cakes listed under the specials...get those...don't even think about it; trust me!!!

After lunch, we needed a good walk and were delighted to find shop after to shop to mingle in...a neat pet store, a real candy shoppe, and all kinds of wonderful galleries featuring local artists (some even descendants to Anderson!).

It's amazing the adventures you can find in your own backyard (so to speak). Both trips took us under 2 hours to get there and less than a tank of gas. And the best part was I got to go home every night, sleep in my own bed, and cuddle with three pesky chihuahuas. Do you have any favorite nearby undiscovered day trips? Share 'em here!

Daytrippin': Breaux Bridge, LA

What do people from small towns do when they want to get away? They go to other small towns! Or at least that's what I did this past weekend. So much has been arriving at the store and still so much planning for the Fall, that my mind and body just needed a break for a couple days. So, I stole away just a couple days from my calender and hit the road! Quite by accident on the way to visit our new baby cousin we popped in Breaux Bridge, LA. We had been tipped off by Ponchatoula shop keep Brenda at the Trail End Antiques that there were lots of great shops and restaurants in the area...she herself has a booth at one of the popular antique stores. She wasn't kidding! As soon as we parked and stepped out in the balmy heat the fragrant scent of seafood boiling grabbed us from nearby restaurant Chez Jacqueline (lunch was quickly determined). We strolled along the easily accessible town blocks, delighted in the lovely antique shops and good mixture of gift stores. After playing tourist and finding some great vintage finds our tummies told us it was lunch time and we meandered back to Jacqueline's. Inside this humble "hole in the wall" the owner's precocious 10 year old granddaughter seated us, soon followed by her grandma-ma. The menu was a good combination of fried seafood standards and French fare as they are really French! I went for the shrimp po-boy and was delighted when she gathered her granddaughter and said they were going to peel the shrimp...now that's fresh, chere! Needless to say it was the BEST po-boy I've ever had!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

So far, our little garden at the store (that we blogged about here) is doing great, although we were a little late to get started. We will soon have heirloom yellow pear tomatoes on their way, zephyr summer squash, sweet cucumbers, and sweet apple peppers; all are growing from our French Market kits that we sell in the store. Mom also supplied me with a cantaloupe and watermelon plant and tho I think its a little late to see any measurable results from those two, I'm curious and planted them too. Soon I'll plant out pumpkins and a nice salad mix for a fall harvest. For me, growing a garden has felt similar to planning our inventory for the shop. Usually, as people are mulling over what to buy as Christmas presents, I'm busily placing orders for Spring. So in that respect, I am trying to guess what I'll want to eat months from now. It is somewhat daunting but my renewed interest came from a great book I'm reading now Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and family. Its a wonderful narrative/memoir about how their family only ate food either grown or raised by themselves or someone they knew. As drastic as it sounds, the book offers tons of encouraging advice on making small changes...shop a farmer's market, start a container garden, eat only what's in season (think of the oil it takes to bring us those winter tomatoes...and they don't even taste that good). Also, this month's Southern Living has two good articles on buying and growing food locally...see page 70-75 and 95-98 (there is a great chart on pg. 97 detailing easy starter plants).

This Saturday, July 11th nearby Hammond, LA will host their monthly Farmer's Market 10am - 2pm (every 2nd Saturday of the month). Check it out and support local, fresh food!

Are We in a Color Depression?

Saturday night I had the privilege of joining with my fellow Interior Designers at the annual IIDA Delta Regional Chapter's RE:awards gala, celebrating our members' award winning projects of the 2008-2009 year.

Our keynote speaker was Kaye Gosline, creative director of Millikin Floors, a lively speaker with over twenty years tracking color trends. I am always fascinated to learn how these select few funnel collective ideas into the tangible stuff we will want! She did touch on what color trends she was seeing but she gave us a far more interesting snapshot of how she sees the world. Kaye confirmed my feelings that right now the world is craving color...bold and daring...we are in a color depression, if you will. She pointed to the Olympics and the famed Bird's Nest that we all admired for its drama and individuality. This is truly the time to find your own voice and determine what's at your core. We are also seeing technology and digital color drive our interiors more than ever before as we are ever more connected i.e. social networking Twitter, Facebook, Linkin. Sustainability is a big catch word but is expanding to mean more than "green" and "earth-friendly"; companies are now applying it to their values and how they do business, treat their employees. Kaye mentioned too that she sees a correlation between the depression of 1930's; people are taking up vegetable gardens again; using what they have, learning to make items by hand...she asked what do we want to take from this experience? She's admiring the rawness of materials, the imperfect quality of used items, leaning on one another in a renewed sense of community. So what's on the horizon in terms of color? Kaye sees the cleanness of "white simplicity", warm metals, purple and grey will still be a viable combo, YELLOW!, red with a pink base...but really its no one color. She closed with pictures of her last jaunt to Paris and noted inspiration for their individuality...ahhh...we knew that didn't we? à bientôt.

Back by special request are our delightful vintage reproduction Strawberry and Very Berry Tablecloths; also we have restocked my favorite Cottage Rose design with its pretty cabbage roses on contrasting turquoise stripes. I just love these; they remind me so much of something my grandmother would have had...of course she would have decided to not use them because they were too pretty...but she would have admired them so. I am not so timid and thankfully they do wash well!

I know, I'm barely back from vacation and I'm thinking of the next celebration! Really its only two weeks away until Independence Day...Woo Hoo! For me, it feels like the Fourth of July is the pinnacle of Summer...celebrations with family and friends alike, fireworks, and BBQ (make mine a veggie burger tho). Are you thinking ahead? We have a lot of fun tableware, linens and aprons in stock now. Also, plenty of garden flags, wreaths and other decorations.

Back from Beachy Bliss...

The first day you return to work from vacation has got to be the worst...today is my first day back and well, ho hum...I'm managing. Ahhh...my vacation to Florida was picture perfect! We stayed at the popular resort Sandestin straddled between the Gulf of Mexico and the Choctawhatchee Bay just outside Destin, Florida. It's great because you can walk everywhere or call their bus system and be carried anywhere you like.

I still have a stack of mail to go through, e-mail that requires my response but my beach ennui is still strongly lingering (and so is my stubborn sunburn). So, please...take a moment and reminiscence with me if you don't mind...

Sandestination!

In a mere two days I will be beach bound to Sandestin, FL! It's my first REAL vacation since opening the store. You may remember my meager attempt last year at a beach trip...only to be cut short by Hurricane Gustav. Skies are clear and I'm ready!

Nest will be well staffed during my absence, thanks to Mary and Charlotte. This is also a perfect time to meet Mary (if you have not yet -- she will be at the shoppe Tuesday thru Thursday); a talented artisan that makes the most fabulous scrabble and mosaic tile necklaces! She's very accommodating on special orders with little to no up charge many of the time. She brought me a sample of some new items she recently created:
